A Review of the Chamberlain Clicker Universal Remote (Model KLIK5U-BK)

If you own an older home with multiple garage bays running different brands of openers, managing a collection of bulky, mismatched visor remotes is highly inconvenient. The Chamberlain Clicker (KLIK5U-BK) is widely considered the industry standard for universal aftermarket replacements.

Here is an honest review of its performance, true real-world compatibility, and hidden limitations.

The Tech Inside the Clicker

The Chamberlain Clicker is not a simple cloner; it is a true multi-frequency transceiver. It houses an internal logic chip pre-loaded with the software protocols for major brands, covering frequencies from 300 MHz to 390 MHz.

According to manufacturer data, it is compatible with over 95% of residential garage door openers installed in the US after 1993, including:

  • Chamberlain, LiftMaster, and Craftsman (Yellow, Purple, Orange, Green Learn Buttons)
  • Genie Intellicode I and II
  • Linear MegaCode
  • Wayne Dalton and Stanley rolling code systems

The Programming Experience

Unlike single-brand remotes that pair with one click, setting up a Clicker requires a bit more patience. Under the battery cover, you will find a small program button and a set of dip switches.

To program it, you must follow a specific sequence: you press the program button, press the main remote button a precise number of times corresponding to your brand code (for example, you press it 4 times if you are syncing to a Craftsman system with a Purple learn button), and then press the program button again to lock it in.

The Verdict: Is It Worth It?

The Chamberlain Clicker retails between $20 and $25, making it significantly cheaper than buying individual OEM brand replacements. Its construction is rugged, and the visor clip holds tightly over thick car sun visors.

The only major drawback is the multi-step programming sequence, which can be tedious if you miscount your button presses. However, for a single remote that can open a LiftMaster door on bay one and a Genie door on bay two, it is an unbeatable value.
